The Lawyer reports that Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) has introduced an onsite wormery to tackle food waste from its London office. Known as ‘the wormery’, it is situated outside the canteen and is home to 70,000 earthworms, which processes around 325 kilograms of food waste each month.
The worms convert organic waste into compost, known as vermicast, which can help to enhance plant growth and health. The majority of the waste comes from the firm’s main and client kitchens, with the catering team ensuring that inedible scraps from food preparation are separated and prepared for composting. The compost produced by the wormery will soon be put to good use. This spring, nearly a tonne of vermicast is set to be distributed to local schools for green projects. The manager of the wormery will lead demonstrations for students, sharing insights about composting, the benefits of reducing waste and quirky facts such as how a worm can eat half its body weight in waste every day.
