Post-Brexit Enforcement of Environmental Law

The EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee met on Weds 6 Feb 2019 to discuss the enforcement of environmental legislation in the UK post-Brexit. The fundamental question being considered was “Will the Office of Environmental Protection as envisaged in the draft Environment Bill provide an effective and independent domestic enforcement mechanism to fill the vacuum left by the European Commission post-Brexit?”. The Sub-Committee was chaired by Lord Teverson and included expert input from Professor Richard Macrory – Emeritus Professor of Environmental Law, University College London; Ms Ruth Chambers – Senior Parliamentary Affairs Associate, Green Alliance; Professor Charlotte Burns – Researcher, Brexit and Environment Network; Ms Debbie Tripley – Director of Environmental Advocacy and Policy, WWF-UK;  Mr Tom West – UK Environment Lead, ClientEarth; Ms Begonia Filgueira – Brexit Task Force Co-Chair, UK Environmental Law Association; Mr Martin Baxter – Member, Broadway Initiative.
